Pios sweep sixth match of the season

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Lewis & Clark Pioneers completed their sixth sweep of the season, as they grabbed all nine matches against the George Fox Bruins on Friday.

At No. 2 doubles, the pair of Natalie Kelly and Josie Legarza only let one game go in an 8-1 victory over George Fox’s Taylor Barnes and Ellen Pearson. As they were finishing up, the No. 1 pair of Wiktoria Plawska and Christine Eliazo were tied 5-5 in their match. They fought back from the tie, taking the next three games to win, 8-5. The No. 3 pair of Adrienne Fox and Carla Thomas posted a score one game better, winning 8-4 against Sarah Tuemmler and Ilsa Teppo.

Going into doubles with a 3-0 score, the Pios kept up the momentum, with both the No. 1 and No. 2 singles courts holding early 5-0 leads. Lewis & Clark eventually took the wins on both courts, only losing a cumulative four games to the Bruins. Legarza won, 6-2, 6-0, while Plawska won 6-1 in both sets.

At No. 4, Kelly took five points in a row in her first set, posting a 5-2 score before winning the match because her opponent retired after an injury.

Eliazo had the longest match of the day, losing her first set 6-2 before winning the second set with the same score. She played a ten point tiebreaker in lieu of a third set, winning 10-7.

At No. 5 singles, Sermet had the only set of the day that went to seven points. She won the first set, 7-5, before taking the second, 6-2.

Tash Hood was the last to finish, competing at the No. 6 spot. After sweeping in the first set with a 6-0 score, she only dropped one game to her opponent Ilse Teppo in the second, winning 6-1.

The Pioneers victory helps them hold on to a No. 29 national ranking, and their 9-2 NWC record. They are currently in third place in the conference, sitting one match behind Linfield, and two matches behind Whitman.

The Pios play their last match of the regular season tomorrow, when they take on Puget Sound on the road, at 12 p.m.
